The Gospel of Luke
Written by Luke the beloved physician and traveling companion of Paul.
Also wrote the Book of Acts
Luke was a Gentile-only non-Jewish author of Scripture
Theme: Light of the world. Universal Savior for all men-not just the Jews. He will be the Savior of the Gentiles as well as the Jews.
Purpose
Overview of Luke
1. Prologue-Luke opens his Gospel with an address to Theophilis (may be a wealthy Roman who sponsored his work),
2. Gives an account of the birth of Jesus and tells us something about the boyhood of Jesus-And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favor of God and men.
3. Gives a brief description of the preaching of John the Baptist, and then an account of Jesus baptism and genealogy-all the way back to Adam. Demonstrates that unlike Adam, Jesus overcomes the tempter, showing his moral fitness.
4. Describes the Galilean ministry of Jesus
5. Describes the actions and teachings of Jesus on the final journey to Jerusalem.
6. Events in Jerusalem
Hostility of the religious establishment which leads to his prediction of the destruction of Jerusalem.
Factions try to discredit Jesus with questions about taxes and the afterlife, but the Lord confounds them.
Ends with Lukes version of the Olivet Discourse (also seen in Matthew).
Betrayal, arrest, trials, crucifixion
Jesus appears to disciples after resurrection and convinces them that he is not a ghost but truly risen from the dead.
He charges them to witness to all nations.
He twice explains that he is at the center of all the OT writings, and his suffering and forgiveness of sins would form the substance or their witness.
Taking them to Bethany, he ascends into heaven.
Important highlights
Luke mentions the Holy Spirit more than any other Gospel writer. He notes that the Holy Spirit was the active agent in the conception of Jesus; Jesus being full of the Holy Spirit; and only Gospel writer to record the promise that the Father would give the Holy Spirit to those who ask him.
Luke contains many examples of Christ praying and teaching prayer.
Christians must maintain a missionary mind-set.
